The smell arrives with the first cooling cycle of the day. Damp, earthy, a little like a basement or a gym bag left in a car. Within a few minutes it fades, and by afternoon nobody notices it any more.
That pattern is diagnostic. A smell that appears at startup and fades during operation is coming from something inside the system that dries out once air is moving across it. Here is what that usually is and what to do about it.
What the Smell Actually Is
Musty odours from an air conditioner are almost always biological. Mould, mildew, and bacteria growing on damp surfaces inside the system produce compounds you can smell at very low concentrations.
The technical name for the startup version is dirty sock syndrome, which describes it accurately enough. It happens when growth accumulates on the evaporator coil during periods when the system is off and damp, then gets blown into the house when the blower starts.
It is worth being clear that this is a growth problem rather than a dirt problem. Cleaning the visible parts of a system does not address a coil that has a biological film on it.
The Evaporator Coil
The coil is the most likely source, because it is the wettest surface in the system.
During operation, moisture condenses on it continuously. When the system cycles off, that surface stays damp in a dark enclosed space at a comfortable temperature. Dust that made it past the filter settles onto the wet fins and provides the organic material.
Over a season or two the fins develop a film. It is not always visible without proper access, and it does not necessarily reduce cooling enough to notice at first.
Coil cleaning requires opening the plenum and using a purpose-made cleaner, and on many systems the coil is not accessible without partial disassembly. It is standard work during annual maintenance, which is the main reason maintenance matters more in this climate than in dry regions.
The Drain Pan and Line
The second source sits directly below the first.
Water collects in the drain pan and leaves through the condensate line. When that line partially blocks, water stands in the pan instead of draining, and standing water in a warm dark space develops growth quickly.
A slow-draining pan produces exactly the smell people describe, and it comes with other signs worth checking: a system that shuts itself off, water near the air handler, or no drip from the outdoor drain outlet on a humid day.
Older pans corrode or crack, which lets water sit in low spots even when the line is clear. A pan with a permanent puddle will keep producing odour no matter how often the line is flushed.
Ductwork
If the smell is stronger in some rooms than others, look at the ducts.
Ductwork running through an unconditioned attic passes through air that is hot and humid for most of the year. Where duct insulation has degraded or come loose, the metal or flex duct inside can drop below the dew point of the surrounding air, and moisture condenses on the outside. Insulation that has become wet stays wet and grows.
A duct that has separated at a joint or a boot pulls unfiltered attic air directly into the system, along with everything in it. That is a common source of odours that have no obvious explanation at the equipment.
Rodent or insect activity in ducts produces its own distinctive smell, which is worth ruling out if the odour is more offensive than merely musty.
Filters
A saturated filter is the easiest thing to check and occasionally the whole answer.
Filters here load faster than manufacturers’ intervals suggest, because humid air carries more particulate and systems run more hours. A filter that has become damp and loaded holds moisture and organic material in the direct airflow path.
Fitting a filter that is too restrictive for the system causes a related problem. High-MERV filters improve filtration but increase static pressure, and a system that cannot move its rated airflow runs a colder, wetter coil. That makes growth conditions better rather than worse.
Other Smells and What They Mean
Musty is the common one, but the smell tells you something about the cause.
- Burning or hot metal at heating startup is often dust burning off and passes within minutes. Persistent burning smells mean stop and cut power.
- Electrical or acrid smells indicate overheating wiring or a failing motor. Shut the system down and call.
- Rotten eggs may indicate a natural gas leak. Leave the building and call the gas utility from outside.
- Sweet or chemical odours can indicate a refrigerant leak.
- Sewage usually means a dry plumbing trap near the drain line or a condensate line tied into plumbing without a proper trap.
Musty is a comfort and air quality issue. The others on that list are not, and the distinction matters.

An oversized system cools the air quickly, satisfies the thermostat, and shuts off. Short cycles do not run long enough to remove much moisture, so indoor humidity stays high while the temperature reads correctly. The house feels cold and clammy.
Short cycling also means the coil goes through many wet-then-idle transitions per day, which is precisely the condition that encourages growth.
A correctly sized system runs longer at lower capacity, removes more moisture, and spends less time sitting wet and idle. This is why staged and variable-speed equipment tends to have fewer odour complaints in humid climates, and why a load calculation matters more here than in a temperate region.
What You Can Do
- Replace the filter, and check it monthly during cooling season rather than quarterly.
- Pour a cup of distilled white vinegar into the condensate drain access every one to three months.
- Confirm water drips from the outdoor drain outlet on a humid day.
- Set the fan to AUTO rather than ON, so the blower is not circulating air across a wet coil between cycles.
- Avoid setting the thermostat extremely low, which extends run time at a colder coil temperature.
- Keep supply and return registers clear so the system moves its designed airflow.
Longer-Term Fixes
When cleaning and drainage do not resolve it, there are options that address the conditions rather than the symptom.
Ultraviolet lamps installed at the coil inhibit growth on the surface they illuminate. They are effective for coil odour specifically and do nothing for duct or filter issues, so they are a targeted tool rather than a general solution.
Whole-house dehumidification reduces indoor moisture independently of the cooling cycle, which addresses the root condition. It is the most thorough answer and the most expensive.
Duct sealing and re-insulation resolves odours originating in the attic and improves efficiency at the same time.
If the equipment is oversized, right-sizing at replacement resolves the underlying cause. That is worth planning for rather than acting on immediately, but it should inform the decision when the time comes.
A Note on Air Quality
Persistent mould odour indicates active growth, and people with asthma, allergies, or respiratory sensitivity often react to it before anyone else in the house notices the smell.
If symptoms improve when people leave the house and return when they come back, that is worth taking seriously rather than masking with air fresheners. Covering the smell leaves the growth in place and in the airflow path.
Final Thoughts
A musty smell at startup is usually the evaporator coil, the drain pan, or both, and both are addressable. Filter changes and drain maintenance handle a good share of cases, and a proper coil cleaning handles most of the rest.
