Why Your Breaker Keeps Tripping

A circuit breaker that trips has done its job. That is worth stating plainly, because the instinct is to treat a tripping breaker as a faulty breaker. Usually it is the opposite. The breaker detected a condition it is designed to detect and cut power before something worse happened.

The question is what condition. There are three broad answers, and they carry very different levels of urgency.

The Three Reasons a Breaker Trips

Every trip falls into one of three categories, and distinguishing between them is the first step in any diagnosis.

Overload. The circuit is carrying more current than its rating allows. A 15-amp circuit asked to carry 18 amps will heat the conductors beyond what their insulation can tolerate, so the breaker opens. This is the most common cause and the least alarming.

Short circuit. A hot conductor contacts a neutral conductor directly. Current rises almost without limit, and the breaker opens immediately and forcefully. This is a genuine fault requiring repair.

Ground fault. A hot conductor contacts a grounded surface, such as a metal box or appliance housing. This is the condition most likely to cause electrocution, which is why GFCI protection exists in wet locations.

The behaviour of the trip tells you something. An overload usually takes time, tripping after several minutes of heavy use. A short circuit trips instantly, often with an audible snap. If your breaker trips the moment you reset it with nothing plugged in, you are looking at a short or a ground fault rather than an overload.

Diagnosing an Overload

Start by mapping what is actually on the circuit. Turn the breaker off and walk the house noting every outlet, light, and fixture that goes dead. Homes rarely have circuits laid out the way anyone assumes.

The pattern to look for is a trip that correlates with usage. If the breaker trips when the microwave and the toaster run together, or when a space heater comes on in a room that already has a television and a computer, the arithmetic is straightforward.

Heat-producing appliances are the usual culprits because they draw far more than most people expect. A space heater on high pulls around 12.5 amps, which is most of a 15-amp circuit on its own. A window air conditioner, a hair dryer, and a countertop appliance all sit in the same range.

The fix is redistribution or a new circuit. What it is emphatically not is a larger breaker. Installing a 20-amp breaker on wiring rated for 15 amps removes the protection without removing the load. The wire will now overheat without anything interrupting it. This is one of the most dangerous things a homeowner can do to their own electrical system, and it is disturbingly common.

Isolating a Short Circuit

If the breaker trips instantly with everything unplugged, the fault is in the fixed wiring or in a hardwired device.

Before assuming that, unplug absolutely everything on the circuit, including things easy to overlook: phone chargers, lamps behind furniture, a garage freezer, an outdoor outlet. Reset the breaker. If it holds, plug items back one at a time, waiting a minute between each. The item that trips it is your fault.

A damaged appliance cord is a frequent offender. So is a cord run under a rug or pinched behind furniture, where the insulation has worn through.

If the breaker trips with nothing connected, the problem is in the wiring itself. Common locations are a backstabbed outlet connection that has loosened, a nail or screw driven through a cable during a repair or a picture hanging, a damaged cable in an attic or crawlspace, or rodent damage to insulation. Finding it requires opening boxes and testing systematically, which is electrical repair work rather than troubleshooting.

When Your AC Is the Cause

Air conditioning circuits trip for their own set of reasons, and the pattern is distinctive: the breaker holds fine until the system runs, then trips after some period of operation.

The most common cause is a failing capacitor. The compressor needs a large surge of current to start. A weak capacitor means the motor draws locked-rotor current for longer than it should, and that sustained draw trips the breaker.

A dirty condenser coil produces the same result by a different route. When the outdoor coil cannot reject heat, head pressure climbs and the compressor works harder, drawing more current. On a hot afternoon, that extra draw crosses the threshold.

Other AC-specific causes include a failing compressor with degraded windings, a seized outdoor fan motor, low refrigerant forcing extended run times, and a compressor grounding internally.

The timing is diagnostic. If it trips at the moment the compressor starts, suspect the capacitor or a starting problem. If it trips after twenty minutes of running on a hot day, suspect the coil or a system running at excessive pressure.

Do not keep resetting an AC breaker. Each reset sends the compressor into another start attempt under fault conditions, and compressors do not survive that treatment indefinitely. If the breaker trips twice, the system needs professional diagnosis rather than another reset.

How Much Can One Circuit Actually Carry?

Knowing the real limits makes it much easier to work out whether you have an overload or a fault.

A 15-amp circuit on 14-gauge wire carries 1,800 watts at full rating. A 20-amp circuit on 12-gauge wire carries 2,400 watts. Those are the absolute ceilings, not the working targets.

The relevant rule is that a circuit expected to carry a load for three hours or more should be loaded to no more than 80 percent of its rating. That puts the practical limit at roughly 1,440 watts on a 15-amp circuit and 1,920 watts on a 20-amp circuit. A space heater, a window unit, or a large countertop appliance eats most of that on its own.

There is no code limit on the number of receptacles on a general-purpose residential circuit, which surprises people. The limit is the total load actually drawn, not the number of places you could plug something in. A bedroom circuit with ten outlets is fine until someone runs a space heater and a hair dryer at the same time.

Certain loads are required to have their own dedicated circuits precisely because they would otherwise consume everything available. Air conditioning condensers, electric water heaters, ranges, dryers, and dishwashers all fall into this category. If a dedicated appliance is sharing a circuit with general outlets, that is an installation problem rather than a usage problem.

GFCI and AFCI Breakers Trip Differently

Modern homes have breakers that do more than detect overload.

A GFCI breaker monitors the balance between hot and neutral. Any imbalance means current is finding another path to ground, and the device trips at a small fraction of what would trip a standard breaker. Moisture is the usual cause, which is why bathroom and outdoor circuits trip during humid weather.

An AFCI breaker detects the electrical signature of arcing, which is the precursor to most electrical fires. AFCI breakers sometimes nuisance trip on motor loads and certain electronics, but they also detect genuine faults that no other device would catch. An AFCI that trips repeatedly deserves investigation rather than replacement with a standard breaker.

When the Breaker Itself Has Failed

Breakers do wear out, though less often than homeowners hope. Mechanical fatigue accumulates over years of thermal cycling, and a breaker that has tripped many times can begin tripping below its rating.

Signs point that way when the breaker trips with a load well under its rating, feels warm to the touch relative to its neighbours, will not reset firmly, or shows scorching around the panel connection.

Any scorching, burning smell, or buzzing from the panel is different in kind. Stop, leave the breaker off, and have the panel inspected. Those are signs of a loose connection generating heat inside the enclosure.

Older Panels and Louisiana Homes

Housing stock across Terrebonne and Lafourche spans a wide range, and plenty of homes still run on panels sized for a much smaller electrical load than a modern household places on them.

A 100-amp service was generous in 1975. Today it feeds central air conditioning, a heat pump, an electric water heater, a modern kitchen, and increasingly an EV charger. Circuits that were adequate then are marginal now, and the symptom is nuisance tripping that no amount of appliance shuffling resolves.

Humidity contributes as well. High moisture accelerates corrosion at terminations, and corroded connections create resistance, which creates heat, which creates more corrosion. Panels in this climate age faster than panels in dry regions.

If your panel is more than about thirty years old, if it is full, or if you are managing tripping by rationing what runs simultaneously, a panel upgrade addresses the cause rather than the symptom.

What Not to Do

  • Do not install a larger breaker to stop the tripping. The wire, not the breaker, sets the limit.
  • Do not reset repeatedly. Each reset re-energises a faulted circuit.
  • Do not ignore a warm breaker, a burning smell, or buzzing from the panel.
  • Do not defeat a GFCI or AFCI by replacing it with a standard breaker.
  • Do not open the panel cover unless you know what you are looking at. The main lugs remain energised with the main breaker off.

Final Thoughts

Most tripping breakers are telling you something simple: this circuit is carrying more than it was built for. Redistribute the load or add a circuit and the problem goes away.

The cases that matter are the ones where redistributing changes nothing. A breaker that trips with nothing connected, a breaker that trips instantly on reset, or a panel that runs warm is reporting a fault in the fixed wiring, and that fault will not improve on its own.
