You set the thermostat, you hear the system come on, and what comes out of the vents is warm. The unit is running. It is simply not cooling.
That combination narrows the problem considerably. If the system were dead, nothing would run at all. Something in the cooling process has stopped working while everything else keeps going. Here is how to work through the likely causes, from the ones you can check yourself to the ones that need a technician.
Check the Thermostat First
It sounds too simple, but it is genuinely the most common cause and takes thirty seconds to rule out.
Confirm the mode is set to COOL rather than HEAT, and check that the fan is set to AUTO rather than ON. That second setting matters more than people expect. With the fan on ON, the blower runs continuously whether or not the system is actively cooling. Between cooling cycles it pushes unconditioned air through the ducts, and that air feels warm at the register even though nothing is wrong.
Also check the setpoint. A thermostat bumped a few degrees, or a schedule that reverted after a power interruption, produces exactly this complaint.
Look at the Outdoor Unit
Go outside and listen. You should hear the compressor running and see the fan on top spinning.
If the outdoor unit is completely silent while the indoor blower runs, you have found the problem. Air conditioning works by moving heat from inside your home to outside. The indoor blower moves air across the coil, but the outdoor unit is what actually rejects that heat. With the outdoor unit down, the blower is circulating air with nothing removing heat from it.
The usual causes are a tripped breaker on the outdoor circuit, a failed capacitor, a bad contactor, or a burnt-out fan motor. Check the breaker first. If it has tripped, reset it once. If it trips again immediately, stop and call someone. A breaker that trips repeatedly on an air conditioning circuit is reporting a real electrical fault, and repeated resets risk damage.
The Air Filter
A clogged filter restricts airflow across the evaporator coil. With too little air moving, the coil gets too cold and moisture on its surface freezes. Ice builds up, and once it does, airflow drops further and the situation compounds.
The result at the vents is weak, warm air, which seems contradictory until you realise the coil is buried in ice. If you pull the filter and it is grey and matted, or if you see frost on the copper refrigerant line at the indoor unit, this is likely your answer.
The fix has two parts. Turn the system to OFF and the fan to ON, which circulates room-temperature air across the coil and melts the ice faster than leaving it off entirely. Give it several hours. Meanwhile, replace the filter. When the ice is fully gone, run the system normally and see whether cooling returns.
If it freezes again within a day or two, the restriction was not the only issue. Persistent freezing usually means low refrigerant or a blower problem, both of which need diagnosis.
Low Refrigerant
Refrigerant is not consumed. A sealed system does not use it up the way an engine uses oil. If the charge is low, it leaked out, and adding more without finding the leak means paying for the same repair again in a few months.
Symptoms of a low charge include air that is cool but not cold, longer and longer run times, ice on the refrigerant lines, and sometimes a hissing or bubbling sound near the indoor unit.
Leaks develop at brazed joints, at service valves, in the evaporator coil, and along line sets. In coastal parishes, corrosion accelerates the process. Salt in the air attacks copper and aluminium, and equipment within a few miles of open water tends to develop leaks earlier than the same equipment installed inland.
Finding a leak is a diagnostic job involving electronic detection, and repair means recovering the remaining refrigerant, fixing the joint or replacing the component, pulling a vacuum, and recharging to the manufacturer specification. It is not a top-up.
A Dirty Outdoor Coil
The outdoor coil is where heat gets released. When its fins are packed with grass clippings, cottonwood, dust, or corrosion, that heat has nowhere to go.
The system keeps running, the compressor keeps working, but the heat it collected indoors cannot be rejected efficiently. Cooling capacity falls and head pressure rises. In severe cases the compressor overheats and trips on its internal protection, which produces intermittent cooling that comes and goes as the unit cools down and restarts.
You can improve matters yourself by clearing vegetation back at least two feet on all sides and rinsing the fins gently with a garden hose from the inside out. Do not use a pressure washer, which bends fins flat and makes the problem permanent. A proper coil cleaning during routine AC maintenance reaches deeper into the coil than rinsing can.
Electrical Faults
Several electrical failures produce warm air specifically.
The capacitor is the most common. It provides the surge of energy needed to start the compressor and fan motors. When it weakens, motors struggle to start or fail to start at all. A telltale symptom is a humming sound from the outdoor unit with no fan movement.
The contactor is the relay that switches power to the outdoor unit. Its contacts pit and corrode over time. When they fail to close properly, the outdoor unit does not receive power even though the thermostat is calling for cooling.
Blown fuses and tripped breakers on the outdoor circuit have the same effect. So does a failed transformer, which typically kills the whole system rather than just cooling.
None of this is homeowner work. Capacitors store dangerous charge even with power disconnected. If the symptoms point here, this is a call for professional AC repair.
If You Have a Heat Pump
Heat pumps are common across South Louisiana because the heating season is short and mild, and they introduce a failure mode that a conventional system does not have.
A heat pump cools and heats using the same refrigerant circuit, reversing the direction of heat flow with a component called a reversing valve. In cooling mode it moves heat outdoors. In heating mode it moves heat indoors.
When that valve sticks, or when the solenoid that operates it fails, the system can remain in heating mode while the thermostat calls for cooling. The result is an air conditioner actively heating your house on a summer afternoon.
The symptom is distinctive. Air from the vents is not merely uncooled but noticeably warm, warmer than room temperature, and the outdoor unit runs normally throughout. Sometimes a valve that has stuck partway produces air that is lukewarm and inconsistent.
Occasionally a stuck valve can be freed by switching the thermostat between heating and cooling a few times, which sometimes shifts it. If that does not resolve it, the valve or its solenoid needs replacement, and diagnosing which of the two has failed requires testing.
A related possibility on any system is a wiring fault or a failed thermostat sending the wrong signal, which can energise heating when cooling was requested. On systems with electric heat strips, a stuck sequencer or relay can leave the strips energised during a cooling call, which produces genuinely hot air.
Duct Problems
Sometimes the equipment is fine and the delivery system is not.
If ductwork runs through an unconditioned attic and a section has separated, come loose at a boot, or lost its insulation, cooled air escapes before reaching the room. Worse, a disconnected return in the attic pulls superheated attic air directly into the system, which can be well over 130 degrees on a Louisiana afternoon.
Suspect duct issues when some rooms cool acceptably and others do not, when the system runs constantly without reaching setpoint, or when airflow at distant registers is noticeably weak.
Why This Happens More Often in Summer Here
An air conditioner is sized for a design temperature. On days that exceed it, the system runs closer to its limit with no margin.
South Louisiana pushes systems in two directions at once. The dry-bulb temperature is high, and the humidity load is enormous. A significant share of the system capacity goes into removing moisture rather than lowering temperature, which is why a marginal system here fails in ways it would not in a drier climate.
That is also why small problems surface in July rather than April. A slightly low charge or a partly blocked coil is invisible in mild weather. Under peak load, the same defect produces warm air at the vents.
What You Can Check Yourself
- Thermostat set to COOL, fan set to AUTO, setpoint below room temperature.
- Air filter clean and correctly seated.
- Outdoor unit running, with the fan turning.
- Breakers for both indoor and outdoor units in the ON position.
- Vegetation cleared from around the outdoor unit.
- All supply registers open and unblocked by furniture.
- Condensate drain not backed up, which can trip a float switch and shut the system down.
When to Stop and Call
Stop troubleshooting and call a technician if the breaker trips again after one reset, if you see ice on the refrigerant lines, if the outdoor unit hums without the fan turning, if you smell burning, or if you hear grinding or screeching from either unit.
Continuing to run a system in these conditions risks turning a repair into a replacement. A compressor that overheats repeatedly does not recover.
Final Thoughts
Warm air from a running system is usually one of a handful of causes, and two of them are things you can check in five minutes. Start with the thermostat and the filter, then look at the outdoor unit. That sequence resolves a fair share of calls before anyone needs to visit.
What it will not resolve is a refrigerant leak, a failed capacitor, or a coil that has corroded through. Those need diagnosis, and putting them off during a Louisiana summer usually costs more than addressing them.
